CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man who was shot by a disgruntled employee in a Loop office building in July has taken the next step in his recovery.

On Tuesday, Steven LaVoie's wife wrote that his condition has stabilized enough to allow him to be moved to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Jody LaVoie posted this message on a website set up to update the public on her husband's progress:"Today officially marked the closing of one chapter of our journey and the opening of another. Since Steve's medical condition is stable we were finally able to move to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. It was a bittersweet day. We left the comfort of the Northwestern ICU which had become a home away from home for me. I will miss all of the staff and the familiarity of my routine. There were many hugs passed around and tears on my part. We are excited that Steve is able to progress to a new stage of our journey. While he is still unconscious, he does have longer periods of "wakefulness" where he opens his eye and does respond to some stimuli. I am very hopeful that with a concentrated active rehabilitation program that he will be able to progress. Please continue to pray for his recovery. All the prayers are helping."

LaVoie had been hospitalized since July at Northwestern, where doctors credited LaVoie's recovery to the excellent health he was in when he arrived at the hospital.
