NEW LENOX, Ill. (WLS) -- A 16-year-old male student was arrested Monday morning after police say he brought a loaded handgun to Lincoln-Way West High School.

District 210 Supt. Scott Tingley said the student reportedly showed a gun belonging to a family member to other students over the weekend. Tingley said administrators were notified before the start of school Monday by another student, who was concerned that he was still in possession of the weapon.

School officials located the student, searched his possessions and found the pistol in his backpack, Tingley said. The student and weapon were turned over to the Will County sheriff's police.

Will County authorities have charged the student with unlawful use of a weapon on school grounds. He is being held at the River Valley Detention Center and will have a court hearing on Tuesday morning.
