Vigil held for Marko Niketic, Glenbrook South High School senior killed in tragic Glenview crash

GLENVIEW, Ill. (WLS) -- It was a somber, heavy-hearted gathering on Tuesday night as hundreds of people stopped to reflect, pray or find some comfort in what has been dark time for one north suburban community.

The impact of Marko Niketic's short life was seen at a solemn vigil where hundreds surrounded a growing memorial in Glenview.

"Everyone's just been trying to get through it, help each other move along through this," Glenbrook South High School junior Henry Kern said.

Niketic's family was there, surrounded by an outpouring of support as each person shared in their heartbreak, devastated by the loss of the beloved 17-year-old.

"It's such a young age to have such a great life taken from him. It's truly, truly a tragedy," Kern said.

Niketic was days from his high school prom and weeks away from graduation before a violent collision on Sunday night along Lake Avenue near Meadow Lane took his life.

The car he was driving was split in half. The other vehicle involved, which police say was going fast, was left unrecognizable.

On Tuesday night, the community was also left with an indelible mark, holding onto one another as they try to find the path to healing.

"It's sad that sometimes dark things brings a community together. But it's also in those times that remind us that because of community light also shines," Immanuel Lutheran Church Pastor Matthew Douglas said.

Glenview police said no charges have been filed at this point, and they are still investigating the crash. They say the driver of the other vehicle is expected to be OK, while the passengers of both vehicles involved are still in critical condition.

Meanwhile, Glenbrook South said counselors are available for students and staff throughout the week.

Funeral arrangements for Niketic have also been released.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Sava Monastery, located at 32377 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Libertyville.

His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. at the same location.

A memorial will also be held at the scene of the crash at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
