CHICAGO (WLS) -- A quiet corner in the city's Roseland neighborhood became the scene of a standoff between a man with a gun and FBI and Chicago police officers on Thursday night.

Police asked a neighbor near the 9500-block of South Vernon Avenue to evacuate with her family.

"He stood up, sat down, all with a gun to his head. He took his clothes off, all with a gun to his head," Tanya Brewer said.

Another neighbor heard someone trying to open his door. Then, police came to escort him away from the scene.

Austin Peña says he and his wife laid on the floor when they saw police with guns draw and the man with a gun to his head.

Nine hours into the standoff, neighbors heard a single gunshot.

Law enforcement sources told ABC7 the man shot himself, and officers offered aid. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Sources told ABC7 the man, now in custody, is Lander Coleman.

He was wanted for shooting his ex-girlfriend and two of her children in Matteson on Saturday, May 18. The woman had an order of protection against him, alleging domestic violence.

When approached by officers on Thursday night, he allegedly showed a weapon, and so began a standoff that went through the night and into Friday morning. The standoff disrupted lives for residents in this part of Roseland, but there is gratitude no one else was hurt.

"Sad day that somebody would get to that point. Wherever point he was at, it wasn't a good one," Brewer said.

"That's pretty scary to have someone who committed that type of crime so close to you and your kids, so that was a scary situation," another neighbor said.
