CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man was shot and killed by Chicago police officers in the Little Village neighborhood Friday morning, CPD said.
The incident occurred at about 2:10 a.m. at a CHA apartment building called Albany Terrace Apartments in the 3000-block of West 21st Place. The building is a 17-story, 350-unit, CHA senior building. Residents said it began as a domestic incident.
Police said they responded to a call of a person with a knife on the sixth floor of the building. After officers knocked on an apartment door, police said they were confronted by a man with a knife who advanced at them.
Officers fired multiple times at the man, who was shot and transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as 58-year-old Timothy Glaze.
No one else was hurt, but two Chicago police officers were transported to the hospital for observation.
"It's frightening, but these are the times," Connie Daniels, who lives in the building, said. "These are the times we live in."
Daniels has lived in the building for 15 years and said nothing like this has ever happened. She's glad no one else was hurt, but said it's shocking to see so many officers surrounding her home.
"This many police, yeah it is," Daniels said.
Some residents wondered why police could not de-escalate the situation without shooting the man.
"These officers knew they were coming into a situation where it could be possible violence. You got Tasers, you got mace, it seems like it should've been some sort of other situation that could've been happening," said resident Charles Odom.
"That's what worries us, that the police shoot first and ask question slater, and this is what happens in Black and brown neighborhoods every time we call the police for a crisis," said Baltazar Enriquez of the Little Village Community Council.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the incident while the officers involved are placed on routine administrative leave.
