Feds investigate CPS admissions

August 2, 2009 (CHICAGO) The Chicago Tribune reports federal investigators have served a grand jury subpoena on CPS to learn more about its admissions process.

The federal probe comes amid an internal CPS investigation of its admissions practices at highly competitive schools like Whitney Young and Walter Payton.

Entry into the city's magnet schools is supposed to be through randomized lottery. Selective enrollment schools and gifted elementary schools are supposed to be based on merit.

School officials have not commented.
