Teen dead after police-involved shooting

April 25, 2010 (CHICAGO)

Officers shot Izael Jackson after he allegedly fired shots at them during a routine traffic stop on the South Side.

The shooting happened about 10:30 p.m. Saturday night near 61st St. and S. Prairie.

Police say Jackson was riding in the vehicle that was pulled over and started firing shots at officers, who returned fire and hit him. A critically injured Jackson was placed into custody and transported to Stroger Hospital.

"He was a passenger," said Octavia Mitchell, Jackson's mother. "If you was doin' a routine traffic stop, how did you end up shooting my son?"

Jackson's family gathered Sunday night at a memorial. Mitchell said Jackson was a loving child and a senior at Hyde Park Academy.

No one else was injured in the shooting, and police say a weapon was recovered at the scene. Jackson was pronounced dead early Sunday morning.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
