Old school memories for sale in Flint

FLINT

The Flint School District is selling memorabilia from the city's oldest school.

Flint Central High School closed its doors in 2009, and now the school district is clearing out the storage closet.

"Basketball jerseys, football jerseys, practice pants, soccer stuff, 60s- and 70s-era stuff," Flint Schools Athletic Coordinator Marty Embry said.

Thousands of items are available through a sale at the Sarvis Center that wraps up tonight. Another sale is planned for next spring and merchandise will also be available through Facebook.

"I found the yearbooks from my junior and senior years. I was the sports editor of the staff," Flint Schools Pupil Person Director Larry Watkins said.

The sale got off to a great start. Hundreds of people made purchases during Tuesday night's Flint Holiday Walk. "You had 95 percent die-hard Flint Central alumni. The other 5 percent were people who wish they could have been Flint Central alumni," Embry said.

All proceeds will go into the Flint Community School's athletic fund. In a way, the past is financing the future. "Transportation, buying new uniforms, the shorts are a lot longer than when Marty wore them, so the cost is more expensive," Watkins said.

Embry and Watkins both work for Flint Community Schools and both were Flint Central student athletes. Both managed to find a few buried treasures. "When I found my jersey, that kind of caught me off guard because I had no idea it was even over there," Embry said.

Most of the items are priced between $5-$20. Everything must go.

"Just grab something that says Central Indians or Phoenix. It doesn't matter because once it's done, it's done," Embry said.

Wednesday's sale at the Sarvis Center runs until 5 p.m. or so.

After that, you can inquire about making purchases through Marty Embry and Flint Central's Facebook pages.
