Damschroder, 61, says he was at the Fremont airport when he had a pain in his left arm. He went to the emergency room where they called a helicopter and transferred him to the Toledo Hospital. Representative Damschroder is now scheduled for emergency triple bypass surgery.
Voters elected Damschroder to another term last November. He previously served in the general assembly from 1995 to 2003, then term-limited out. Rex Damschroder holds the same seat his father, Gene, held for ten years. That was during the mid-70s to the early 80s.
Three years ago, in June of 2008, Gene Damschroder was piloting a Cessna when it crashed into a field. The accident took the life of the 86-year-old and 5 others on board. An autopsy report noted Gene Damschroder suffered from severe coronary artery disease. Now, his son is facing a condition with his heart and about to undergo a procedure that could save his life.
Representative Damschroder told 13abc he had to cancel a few appointments Tuesday and will probably have to cancel a few more in the days and weeks ahead. Meantime, he says his staff will hold down the fort.
