Jan McNichol is a first grade teacher at Regina Coeli school. She snapped pictures Thursday night when the storm rolled through and flooded parts of the school.
Third grade teacher Lynnette McClain says, "At least six classrooms and our gymnasium, as well as our library sustained some water damage."
The staff was actually inside the building at the time for "move-in night" -- an event where students come in to meet their new teachers. McClain says, "We were here until midnight, all of us, trying to save and move everything we could."
The gymnasium and the library sustained the bulk of the damage. McNichol says, "It flooded our courtyard and the drains couldn't handle the surge of rain and it just started seeping into our library first and then it went to the classrooms and made a mess. I feel so bad for our librarian. She spent the whole summer re-doing the library. We took all the books out that she just put in. And that carpet was probably weeks old."
The professional cleaners took over the clean-up duties Friday morning. They working to shampoo and sanitize the carpets.
Regina Coeli school will be closed Monday due to flooding from Thursday night's storm. Kindergarten through eighth grade will not attend Monday. However, the preschool will be open. Faculty should report as usual.
