The Sun-Times reports the application for students starting next year includes the question, "Would you consider yourself to be a member of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered community?"
School officials say it helps them direct students toward services or groups that could help in the college transition.
Elmhurst College is affiliated with the United Church of Christ, which historically has favored liberal views on social issues.
