The changes are expected to happen this week.
The cuts are because of money concerns and the city of Chicago's budget problems.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Mayor Rahm Emanuel has slashed Daley's security and bodyguard detail from six active Chicago police officers to three. The other three officers reportedly are returning to street duty.
The Sun-Times also reports Daley and his wife, Maggie, will continue to have access to two city vehicles, but only when necessary, and officers will be on call to take the former first lady -- who suffers from breast cancer -- to and from the hospital.
Mayor Emanuel is working to make several cut to the city's budget. He recently told the Chicago police superintendent to cut $190 million from the police department's budget, and taxpayers have lashed out about the security detail on the city's interactive budget website, which functions like a virtual suggestion box.
There were no details yet on how much money the security detail trimming will actually save the city, but Emanuel was scheduled to appear at an unrelated event Tuesday in the Loop, where he would likely face questions on the issue.
