Chicago police have charged Daniel Tyler, 34, with first degree murder in the brutal beating death of neighbor Mike Justo, 56. Tyler was taken into custody on Wednesday but was just charged Friday.
According to authorities, after the crime, police say they found Tyler with self-inflicted razor blade cuts to his neck, wrists and ankles. The suspect was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he allegedly attacked a nurse with a glass shelf. She was cut but her injuries are not serious.
Then, Tyler allegedly struck a police officer in the face and attempted to disarm him before he was subdued.
On Tuesday night, Justo was found in the basement of his home on the 5300-block of North Northwest Highway with massive head injuries reportedly inflicted by a bat and hammer. Police say his home was burglarized earlier in the day, and that they were looking at possible links to Tyler.
Tyler lives immediately next door to the victim who neighbors remember as a kind man. Some say they saw Tyler but didn't have any contact with him.
According to a police source, Tyler has made some incriminating statements to authorities about the crime. He is expected to appear in bond court sometime soon.
