Police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said neither of the women are nuns, correcting earlier reports.
The unidentified woman, whose 82th birthday was today, was pronounced dead at 12:26 p.m. at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The spokeswoman said the woman killed was from north suburban Niles and her birthday was Sept. 17, 1929.
Jefferson Park District police Lt. John Lewison said the surviving woman, 78, is in "critical condition.''
The tragedy unfolded at 11:55 a.m. when a black pickup truck hit the two female pedestrians who are senior citizens at 5728 W. Lawrence Ave., according to a Jefferson Park District police sergeant. The truck fled the scene.
The women were walking across Lawrence Avenue when the crime occurred, according to Baety.
They were initially taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in serious condition, according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis.
The truck was being driven by a man and it was last seen eastbound on Lawrence. The truck had ladders on it and the driver was wearing dark clothing, according to the sergeant.
Baety said driver was described as being in his late 20s, or early 30s and he was not in custody Saturday afternoon.
The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
