Researchers made the discovery while tracking 1,000 diabetes patients over age 60 in Japan during a 15- year period.
Doctors say they aren't sure what the link is between the two diseases but they do know sugar has a damaging effect on both the nervous and vascular systems.
The study was published in the journal Neurology.
