Fear of childbirth might lead to longer labor

June 27, 2012

Researchers in Norway found women fearful of giving birth spent about an hour and a half longer in labor than other women.

Fear of birth was also associated with a greater likelihood of an instrumental vaginal delivery or an emergency C-section. Generally, a longer labor duration increases the risk of C-section.

However, scientists point out that a large number of women who had labor fears successfully had a vaginal delivery.
