The shooting happened before noon on Monday at The Meadows Golf Course in Blue Island.
"Eyewitnesses report that Mr. Nero was walking in the parking lot when a blue vehicle, possibly an SUV, pulled up next to him and began firing at him. The vehicle then fled the scene," said John Rita, Blue Island public safety director.
Police say the victim, 43-year-old Orville Nero was hit with several shots.
He was conscious and able to tell investigators he believes the shots came from inside a blue vehicle, but he is unable to identify the shooter. He had just finished a morning round of golf and was in the parking lot on the way to his car when he was shot.
Neighbors say the heard at least three shots, which got their attention in this normally very quiet area.
"Now it's putting a little question mark, hopefully nothing like this doesn't happen again because I think we might need to look for somewhere else to live," said Elaine McLurkin, neighbor.
Police say this appears to be a random shooting, or perhaps a case of mistaken identity. Nero was taken to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn. He was last listed in satisfactory condition.
