The students were approached by three men around 11 p.m. Monday, April 28. UIC police said one of the men was armed with a silver handgun. He demanded money, while the other two offenders searched the students and took their property. He then told the victims to lie down on the street and count to 30.
The victims followed the man's orders, as the offenders fled the scene.
No one was injured, UIC officials said.
The offenders are described as three black males, 18-20. The first offender was 5'7" and 130 pounds, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt and black pants. The second offender is about 5'0" and 160 pounds, wearing a baseball cap and hooded sweatshirt with a Cubs logo on back. The third offender was about 5'10" and 160 pounds, wearing a green baseball cap and black hooded sweatshirt.
UIC police are encouraging students to walk in groups, use well-lit walkways and know the locations of emergency phones, as well as have the campus security number 312 355 5555 programmed into cell phones. Also, students should not display electronics.
