CHICAGO (WLS) -- Lake Shore Drive was overrun by cyclists as part of the 14th annual Bike the Drive Sunday morning.

Cars were not allowed on the drive as cyclists of all ages watched the sunrise over Lake Michigan, and rode past the iconic views of Chicago's skyline, and it was all for a good cause.

Although it did rain throughout the ride it didn't stop thousands of people from participating this year.

"It was surreal because I drive it every day, and not to be trying to pass somebody in a car, it was weird," said Steve Willuweit.

"It's not for any cars, just bikers and I think that's really cool," Sean Willuweit said.

Irene Boltz is a veteran and comes back year after year.

"It's quiet, you see Chicago from a whole different angle," said Irene Boltz. "And it's happy people, everyone is happy, this is great!"

Boltz brought along Mary Kate Stefanowski to Bike the Drive for the first time.

"I love it," Stefanowski said. "The people are so nice here, everyone so excited, full of energy, and it's great."

A little rain did nothing to dampen any of the participants' spirits.

The 14th annual Bike the Drive closed Lake Shore Drive to vehicle traffic for almost five hours from Hollywood Avenue to 59th Street, 30 scenic miles.

"I want to come back and do it again," Kelly Willuweit said. "I just like to ride on Lake Shore Drive."

Proceeds of the event go toward the Active Transportation Alliance, making biking, walking and transit safe and easy for commuters.
