Crash nearly splits car in half; driver survives

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries after an early morning crash on the South Side that nearly split his car in half, officials said.

The 35-year-old driver may have been trying to avoid people walking in the street in the Avalon Park neighborhood at about 3 a.m. Monday, witnesses told police.

Firefighters at the scene said they are amazed he survived.
