CHICAGO (WLS) -- Cardinal Blase Cupich helped spread holiday cheer to those who couldn't be home on Christmas Eve.

He visited young patients and their parents at Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago on Saturday.

The cardinal, who has made it a tradition to visit the hospital on Christmas Eve, said he is moved by the resilience of the children, families and staff at the hospital.

He shared that visiting with parents strengthens his own faith.

"Dealing with the illness of a child, there's really nothing more heart wrenching. But to see them carry on with a great sense of hope and tender love that they have for their children is really inspiring to me," Cardinal Cupich said.

He also thanked caregivers, saying they witness the highs and lows of human life.
