CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man is in police custody Tuesday evening after he allegedly stole a vehicle with a baby inside on Chicago's West Side, police said.

A surveillance camera captured the frightening incident police say happened on a block of mom-and-pop businesses in the 5800-block of W. Roosevelt around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The 34-year-old mother had stopped into a photo studio while her 12-month-old girl was being watched in the Volvo SUV by a 10-year-old cousin. Then, the video shows a man walking up and entering the vehicle.

Moments later, the 10-year-old gets out and runs into the photo studio to notify the mother. They both run out, appearing frantic, but it's too late as the SUV is seen turning the corner.

What happened next is simply extraordinary. The husband of the frightened mother said an employee of the photo studio got in her car and gave chase to the 900-block of South Menard, where police say the man dropped off the baby. The man was later arrested in the 4500-block of West Fulton, police said.

The family says they're grateful for that Good Samaritan and that their baby girl was unharmed.

Police say charges are pending against the 34-year-old man who was arrested. It's unclear if he knew initially that there was a baby in the vehicle.
