Mundelein man killed in hit-and-run
Mundelein police say a man found dead after he went missing was the victim of a hit-and-run.

MUNDELEIN, Ill. (WLS) -- Police in north suburban Mundelein are questioning a person in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed a bicyclist.

The body of 40-year-old Carl Roderwald was discovered near his bicycle Thursday along Route 83 at McRae lane in Mundelein. He was riding home Wednesday night when police say a driver hit Roderwald and kept going.

"You took the most important person in my life away from me," said Victoria Roderwald, victim's wife. "He was so sweet and giving and wore his heart on his sleeve."

Relatives say Roderwald was last seen around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night. He was heading home on his bicycle after playing in a volleyball league he had just joined. When he didn't return home later that night, friends began to look for him.

"He was a good person and like someone else said, he was a very happy-go-lucky guy who like to enjoy life as much as possible," said Mike Komater, victim's brother-in-law.

Investigators used cellphone records to track Roderwald to the area of Route 83 and Route 176 on Thursday. They found Roderwald's body along with his damaged bike were found in an area of tall grass. Police say a motorist struck Roderwald then left the scene in a vehicle left damaged by the impact.

Carl Roderwald was a salesman who is survived by his wife and 16-year-old daughter. The couple was married for seven years and he recently celebrated a birthday last month. He's being remembered as a kind man who went out of his way to make people happy.

"He was the best man I ever knew and I loved him so much," said Victoria Roderwald.

Mundelein police said Friday they were talking to a 64-year-old motorist and have taken his Ford F-150 pickup truck into possession, but are still asking the public to come forward if they have any information. No charges have been filed.
