Chicago police said at least six people were injured in a shooting in the city's Chatham neighborhood Wednesday night, including a 12-year-old.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police said at least six people were injured in a shooting in the city's Chatham neighborhood Wednesday night, including a 12-year-old.

Emergency crews responded at 8:16 p.m. to the 500 block of East 75th Street, according to Chicago Police.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said the victims were standing on the street when it appears someone walked up and opened fire. Langford also said it's possible others were shot and ran from the scene instead of being taken to hospitals for treatment.

Anti-violence activists said the shooting happened at a memorial for a victim of Chicago violence and was in retaliation for another shooting. They said retaliation for the Chatham shooting was expected again Wednesday night, based on posts they saw on social media.

"I'm asking that those individuals who see this, who are planning retaliation right now, stand down from that and we look for peaceful alternatives," said activist Jedidiah Brown.

Police said a 12-year-old girl sustained a graze wound to the head and was taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in good condition.

Community activist Andrew Holmes said he was heading to Comer to check on the child's condition.

Police said a 20-year-old woman in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the right leg and a 43-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the right hand were taken to Stroger Hospital both in stable condition. A 16-year-old-man was shot in the neck and a 20-year-old woman was shot in the left leg, and both were taken to Christ Hospital in serious condition. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the right arm and took himself to Jackson Park Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

Area South detectives are investigating the shooting.
