2 Chicago Catholic schools closing

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Two of Chicago's Catholic schools will close in July due to low enrollment.

St. Florian School and Notre Dame High School for Girls will close July 1 after facing declining enrollment and financial difficulties over the past several years, according to a statement from the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year for St. Florian was at 49 students and Notre Dame had an enrollment of 31 students, officials said.

The archdiocese said it remains committed to providing strong Catholic schools throughout Cook and Lake counties.

"The Archdiocese commends the dedicated leaders, faculty and staff at St. Florian School and Notre Dame High School for Girls for their tireless work to instill a rich Catholic identity into academically excellent communities," the statement said.

Officials are working with affected families to find alternative ways for Chicago children to continue a Catholic education.
