Chicago Park District: Swim bans lifted at beaches, some advisories remain Tuesday

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Chicago Park District has lifted all swim bans at city beaches Tuesday, though some advisories remain in efect.

Swimming bans were put in place after flooding prompted the city to reverse the flow of the Chicago River into Lake Michigan. This led to unsafe levels of bacteria in the water.

While there are no longer swim bans in place, a swimming advisories remain at Leone Beach and Marion Mahony Griffin Beach as of 2 p.m., due to bacteria levels. Swimming is not banned, but swimmers should be cautious.

The EPA recommend notifying the public when enterococci bacteria levels are above 1,000 CCE. Currently the levels at Leone Beach are 2,143 CCE and at the levels at Marion beach are 1,604 CCE.

Meanwhile, Evanston has closed all of its beaches to swimming except for South Boulevard Beach, which has safe levels and is open to swimming. The Evanston Dog Beach is also closed.
