CPD honors fallen Officers Eduardo Marmolejo, Conrad Gary 1 year after being killed by train

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police held a memorial ceremony Monday to remember two officers killed in the line of duty one year ago.

On December 17, 2018, Officers Eduardo Marmolejo, 37, and Conrad Gary, 31, died on the Metra tracks responding to a call of shots fired. They were struck by a train as they searched for a suspect in the city's Rosemoor neighborhood.

The ceremony took place at the 5th District, where both officers worked. The officers, both fathers, were remembered by their fellow officers with their widows and families in attendance.

"The only comfort I can give the families is this: Going forward, your family is so much larger than just the bounds of genetics. Your family is so much bigger than one house can hold. Your family is the entire Chicago Police Department," said Interim Chicago Police Superintendent Charlie Beck.

"This is your 5th District family, so never hesitate to reach out to us for anything," Sgt. Bridget Robinson said.

A vintage CPD bell was rung three times for each officer. It signals the field is clear and survivors may proceed. As they offered support to the Marmolejo and Gary families, all officers were included in the prayers.

"We close with prayer as we recognize again the sacred nature of why we are here and what our officers do on the streets every day, indeed doing God's work," said Father Dan Brandt, CPD chaplain.

While the ceremony was special for the sad anniversary of the officers' death, the officers are honored every day with a permanent tribute in front of the 5th District.
