CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 26-year-old man has died after a shooting Tuesday afternoon in the 300 block of West 71st Street on Chicago's South Side, Chicago police confirm.

Brett Ewing, 26, and a young child were shot while in the backseat of a vehicle. Ewing was shot multiple times and the boy was shot in the wrist. They were both self-transported to St. Bernard Hospital. Ewing was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The boy, whose age has not been confirmed, was transferred to Comers Children's Hospital and is in stable condition.

The shooting took place about 1.5 blocks from a CPS Safe Passage route. A Safe Passage monitor told Eyewitness News off-camera that the two victims were in a backseat of a car driven by two females when they drove up to the monitor after the shooting.

The monitor said he directed the driver to St. Bernard, and as he began to call 911, the car drove off towards the hospital.

Police say Ewing was the intended target of the shooting and was a documented gang member.
