CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 9-year-old boy was fatally shot Sunday while inside a home on Chicago's Far South Side, Chicago police said.
Crime scene tape now surrounds the home in the 9400-block of SouthWallace Street where the shooting occurred, according to police.
It happened just after 6:30 p.m. at the home where, police said, the boy lived with extended family in the Washington Heights neighborhood.
Officials said the boy went into traumatic arrest before being taken to Comer Children's Hospital, initially reported with critical injuries to the body. He later died.
Police said multiple children and adults where inside the residence at the time of the shooting.
It's a heart-wrenching turn of events for a family just hours into the new year.
"Get these guns out your homes! Get them out your homes," said crisis responder Andrew Holmes.
Police said it is unclear at this time if the child had more than one gunshot wound.
Area 2 Detectives are investigating.
The boy is among five killed and at least eight others shot in Chciago New Year's Day gun violence, marking a violent and deadly start to 2023.
