Shots fired at Chicago police for 6th time in 12 days

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago police arrested a person accused of shooting at officers early Thursday morning near the University of Illinois at Chicago campus.

Police responded around 2 a.m. to a report of shots fired at a car near West Taylor and South Carpenter streets near the UIC library in the city's University Village neighborhood.

Amardeep Singh, an eyewitness, said he was trying to get to his apartment behind the UIC library when he saw a man swaying back and forth.

"He starts to reach for his leg like he's looking for something so I just wait and look. He falls drunk and a gun falls out of his sock. And I was like, 'Crap!' So I run sideways. He picks up the gun and he reloads it - and I've got to do something - I ran. He shoots right in front - like, bang! He just shoots," Singh said.

Singh ran into a friend's apartment and called 911.

Police said that person shot at the responding officers a few blocks away, in the 800-block of South Miller Street.

No one was injured. The suspect was taken into custody. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

Investigators searched the scene later Thursday morning for shell casings and other evidence. There is no word yet on a motive.

Police said this is the sixth time someone has fired shots at officers since Sunday, Nov. 27.
