Chilly weekend to give way to warmer weather
After relatively mild temperatures, October's warmer than usual weather gave way to a cold snap that caught some off-guard.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- It's another fall day in Chicago that feels like winter. After relatively mild temperatures, October's warmer than usual weather gave way to a cold snap that caught some off-guard.

"It's 80 degrees in California. I didn't check the weather," said one visitor.

But Cassandra Robinson and her girlfriends, downtown for a reunion, didn't seem to mind the predicted cool down.

"It's nice out today! It's a beautiful day!" Robinson said.

Newlyweds Rich and Joanna Martin, who braved the chill while taking wedding photos along North Michigan Avenue were okay with the weather as well.

"We would take sunny and chilly over warm and cloudy," said Joanna.

As the coldest air of the season hit, temperatures dropped into the 20s and 30s overnight, bringing with it a freeze warning.

Forecasters say despite our unseasonable warm weather, a first frost is not unusual this time of year. But it is a concern for some, like farmer Bonnie Dotson, who worried the frost would kill their crops and other sensitive vegetation.

"As soon as we see a frost in the forecast we get a lot of people ready to pick and we pick all day long."

There were also serious efforts to make sure people stayed warm. At the annual Operation Warm event and resource fair, the Chicago Housing Authority distributed 10,000 coats to children. Meanwhile, plenty tried to take in what warmer weather is left, knowing that the worst is yet to come.

"It's gonna get too cold for too long so we might as well take advantage of it," said Sierra Chmela

Forecasters say not to worry; this isn't really an indication of a winter to come. Just wait a few days and it will warm up again.
