CHICAGO (WLS) -- The end of summer is a real headache for thousands of students.

A five-year study by Nationwide Children's Hospital found emergency room visits by children with headaches spikes more than 31-percent in the fall. Throughout the rest of the year, it's about the same season to season.

"I had a lot of catch up homework to do and a lot of tests to make up. And that just added to the stress," Adria Houghtby, high school student, said.

"We do feel that school does kind of trigger them more often than typically until she kind of gets back into her routine," Mary Houghtby, mother, said.

Doctors say children can avoid getting headaches by eating three meals a day, getting enough sleep and finding ways to relieve stress.
