May 7, 2014 (CHICAGO) (WLS) -- Motherhood is growing more challenging in the U.S. and more dangerous in many part of the world, according to Save the Children's 15th annual report.
Cokie Roberts, ABC News political commentator and NPR senior news analyst, is in town for a discussion of the 15th State of the World's Mothers report by Save the Children at a Chicago Council on Global Affairs event.
A release for the discussion said the number of children dying each year is down to 6.6 million in 2012 from 12 million in 1990. Although this is a positive trend, the release said progress is being slowed by conflict, like the crisis in Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Syria, and humanitarian emergencies, like when Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines.
Roberts, along with Global Agriculture and Food Senior Fellow Roger Thurow and Save the Children President and CEO Carolyn Miles, will discuss how preventing conflict and reducing vulnerability in places where natural disasters are likely to strike is something governments and the humanitarian community can help.
