2 shot by off-duty Cook Co. deputy on South Side

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A shooting involving a Cook County deputy that left two people wounded on Chicago's South Side Sunday night is under investigation.

The shooting happened just before 9 p.m. in the 7000-block of South Kansas Street in the city's Marquette Park neighborhood. Police said an off-duty Cook County deputy was eating in his car when he saw a 15-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man fighting with some people in a car.

After the deputy announced he was law enforcement, police said the two suspects turned around and pointed their guns at him. The deputy shot the 15-year-old in the leg and the 23-year-old in the ankle, police said. Sources said the two men are alleged gang members.

Police said before the off-duty officer got involved, the two young men had fired at a group of people in a car during an argument.

The officer was not injured. The two men he shot were taken to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, where they are listed in good condition.

No one else was hurt.

George Bew rides his bike 20 miles a day, but at night he stays away.

"I enjoy the park and love the park," Bew said. "This is a beautiful park and it's a shame people can't be safe in the park."

Charges are pending against the suspects. The Cook County Sheriff's office is referring all questions to the Chicago Police Department.
