CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 3-year-old boy who died on Chicago's Far South Side was identified Tuesday morning.

Tayveon J. Thomas, of the 12200-block of South Green Street, died at Roseland Hospital Monday morning, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Police received a 911 call just before 8:25 a.m. about a boy who was not breathing near 122nd and Green in the city's West Pullman neighborhood. The fire department transported him to Roseland, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said there were visible signs of abuse on Tayveon's body. They are working to determine whether the injuries were caused by a fall or by criminal action.

The medical examiner's office is expected to perform an autopsy Tuesday. Police said they will wait for autopsy results before considering whether or not to file charges against Tayveon's parents.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services opened an investigation Monday into the allegations of abuse. DCFS has not had contact with the family before, officials said.
