1st PLACE | FAMILY LOVE | FALL 2014 (Canton, China)
Allen Ko/T-PHOTO STUDIOS Allen.Ko

The rice-throwing. The bouquet toss. The ... bride toss?

Everyone treasures different moments from their wedding, and this set of award-winning photos captures those moments and everything in between.

Four times a year, the International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers chooses the best of the best in wedding photography. There are winners in each of 20 categories, making for a total of 80 winning photos each year.

See all 80 photos on the ISPWP blog.

So what elements propel good wedding photos into the stratosphere of award-winning photos?

1st PLACE | EMOTIONAL IMPACT | FALL 2014 (Florence, Italy)

"There are many technically excellent wedding photographs that are entered into the ISPWP contests," Joe Milton, the founder and executive director of the ISPWP, told ABC, "but the truly captivating wedding photographs stand out as unique and have a lot of emotional and visual impact."

To choose the winners, members of the ISPWP volunteer to judge each other, though they may not judge a contest they have entered. The ISPWP is an elite society of wedding photographers, with 1,200 members from about 100 countries. Milton said he believes this process sets the ISPWP contest apart from other wedding photography contests.

"Many wedding photography contests use magazine editors, or wedding planners, or bloggers to judge, but the ISPWP believes that the best people to judge photography are professional photographers," Milton said.

The society receives about 5,000 to 6,000 entries per contest, as members can enter more than one photo across the categories. Categories cover everything from technical aspects of the photo to specific details of the wedding, including "The Decisive Moment," "Emotional Impact" and "Kids Will Be Kids."

Since there are 80 winners, ABC asked Milton if he could pick just one favorite.

"It's impossible for me to pick a favorite," he said. "I love them all."
