Funnel clouds reported in western suburbs

OAK BROOK, Ill. (WLS) -- A number of funnel cloud sightings reported in the western suburbs prompted officials to activate emergency sirens early Tuesday evening.

Oak Brook officials said they activated the sirens around 6:20 p.m. after calls from residents saying they had spotted a funnel cloud.

"It started rolling, rolling, rolling and it was right at 22nd and Butterfield, where I was," said Kirtiker Thaker.

Police said sirens were activated in Hinsdale as well after they received two 911 calls for funnel clouds and an officer observed rotating clouds.

"I saw the swirling cloud coming out of the sky, it was pretty small but far away. It was sucking other clouds with it. No one really seemed concerned, a couple people were scared, a few kids ran inside. I could hear sirens from other towns going off," said Corrine Moorman, who spotted a funnel cloud while shopping in Downers Grove.

The quick-moving storms also led to flooding in west suburban La Grange, where several residential streets also had to be closed due to flooding. And while it wasn't that deep, a couple of folks brought out their canoe to get around.
