Cancer survivor talks how clinical trials helped during cancer fight

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A cancer diagnosis is a very scary one for anyone. But thanks to dramatic advances in research and treatment, it's not the automatic death sentence.

That was the case for Maddy Oliver. She was just 17 when she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a malignant sarcoma of the bone that has one of the lowest survival rates for pediatric cancers.

But thanks to a clinical trial funded by the Schaumburg based nonprofit, Gateway for Cancer Research, Oliver is now cancer free and living a normal healthy life.

Oliver and Michael Burton, the chief development officer from Gateway for Cancer Research, stopped by ABC 7 Chicago to talk about how the clinical trials are helping.

Gateway for Cancer Research has 54 cancer clinical trials underway right now. Ninety-nine cents of every dollar donated directly supports research.
