For people who have lost a loved one, the holiday season can be especially difficult. Fortunately, there are some ways to bring back joy into the season.

'Tis the season of holiday parties, family gatherings and festive celebrations. Yet, for the millions of Americans grieving a lost loved one, all of these events can make their pain even more intense.

But grief experts say there are steps you can take to make this grief more manageable.

Step one: mix up the holiday routine. Hosting a traditional meal may underscore the absence of a missing loved one. If you ever thought of heading to the beach instead, or creating a new family tradition - this may be the time to do it.

Step two: realize that loss comes in many forms. If you've gone through a divorce, or even lost your job, take the time you need to grieve.

And step three: do something for yourself, no matter how small. Sign up for an art class, reach out to an old friend, or ask for a raise. Even one tiny step can help jumpstart your new life.

So this holiday season, remember while you can't take away the pain of loss, it is possible to create wonderful new memories.

Experts say if feelings of profound sadness persist for longer than two weeks, it's time to seek medical attention to see what's really going on.

Doctors say it might be a sign of depression or that you have another condition such as a thyroid problem.
