CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago is trying to count the number of homeless people on the streets right now.

The federal government mandates that this be done each January for cities to qualify for federal homeless assistance money.

Last year, on a very cold night, volunteers interviewed nearly 1,000 homeless people.
