Local furniture stores send WWII veterans on Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Seventy years ago, the "Greatest Generation" saved the world during WWII. Now, many of these aging heroes are getting the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. to see the monuments built in their honor.
Honor Flight gives all-expense-paid trips to veterans. As many as 15,000 WWII veterans in Chicago have not yet taken their free trip.
On Memorial Day weekend, Walter E. Smithe furniture stores hope find and sign up these veterans for their free trip.
Honor Flight Chicago was founded in 2008 and has to-date flown 5,502 WWII veterans to Washington, D.C., for their special "day of honor." Remaining 2015 honor flights from Midway Airport are scheduled for June 3, June 30, July 29, September 2 and September 30.
