ABC 7 Eyewitness News Salutes Jaime P. Pesongco, a 94-year-old Chicago man who fought in World War II.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- ABC 7 EyeWitness News Salutes a 94-year-old Chicago man who fought in World War II. The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs has named Jaime P. Pesongco Illinois' Veteran of the Month. The ceremony took place last week at the Consulate General of the Philippines office in Chicago.

In 1942, Pesongco was a young man in the Philippines when Japanese troops overran the country. He joined the resistance and fought for his country, alongside U.S. troops. He served for 30 months, sometimes only armed with a knife to protect himself.

In recent years, Pesongco has helped homeless veterans and been an outspoken voice to make sure all veterans receive full benefits - and that's why ABC7 salutes Jaime Pesongco.
