Judge tours Broadview ICE facility amid 'inhumane conditions' allegations

On Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Laura McNally and a small group visited the ICE facility in Broadview, which has been at the heart of "Operation Midway Blitz."

The small group includes the judge and representatives from both the government and the plaintiffs, including the ACLU, to see what it's like inside.

The Department of Homeland Security has denied any claims that there are subprime conditions at the Broadview facility.

Broadview is solely a processing center, so people are not supposed to be held there for an extended period of time.

In court, a government attorney acknowledged the facility is operating beyond its capacity and blamed Illinois law for overcrowding, citing the TRUST Act.

It was unclear if the judge allowed attorneys to have brief conversations with people being detained.

DHS responded to ABC7, saying, "All detainees are provided with three meals a day, water, and have access to phones to communicate with their family members and lawyers. No one is denied access to proper medical care."

Chicago day care worker released from ICE detention after arrest angered community: law firm

About a week after her arrest, a day care worker detained by federal immigration agents in Chicago was released from custody, a law firm said.

Diana Santillana Galeano was released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention in Clay County, Indiana Wednesday night, according to a news release from Hughes Socol Piers Resnick & Dym.

"I am so grateful to everyone who has advocated on my behalf, and on behalf of the countless others who have experienced similar trauma over recent months in the Chicago area," Santillana Galeano said in a statement. "I love our community and the children I teach, and I can't wait to see them again."

Earlier Wednesday, federal Judge Jeremy C. Daniel ordered the Trump administration to provide a bond hearing for Santillana Galeano.

"We are thrilled that Ms. Santillana was released, and has been able to return home to Chicago where she belongs," said attorney Charlie Wysong, who represents Santillana Galeano along with Ms. Naiara Testai at Hughes Socol Piers Resnick & Dym, Ltd. "We will continue to pursue her immigration claims to stay in the United States. We are grateful to her community for the outpouring of support over these difficult days, and ask that her privacy be respected while she rests and recovers from this ordeal."

The so-called "Broadview Six" pleaded not guilty Wednesday, after being accused of getting violent with federal immigration agents.

The group includes several local politicians.

They were among the people accused of surrounding and damaging a government vehicle, back in September at the Broadview U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility.

Judge orders Trump administration to give Chicago day care worker bond hearing after ICE arrest

Federal Judge Jeremy C. Daniel has ordered the Trump administration to provide a bond hearing for the Chicago day care worker who was detained by federal immigration agents last week.

Judge Daniel ruled, as he has in other recent high-profile cases, that Diana Patricia Santillana Galeano's detention without a bond hearing is unlawful because it violates her right to due process.

The government is ordered to hold the bond hearing on or before Nov. 18. The hearing that was originally set in federal court Thursday has been canceled.
