Chicago shootings: Tracking gun violence in 2024

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.
"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."
While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Teen shot while walking into Gage Park house, Chicago police say
A teenager was shot just after midnight on the city's Southwest Side, according to Chicago police.
The shooting happened on Thursday around 12:10 a.m. in the 3000-block of 55th Street in Gage Park.
A 17-year-old boy was walking towards a house when he was shot in the back, police said.
The teenager was taken to the hospital and was listed under good condition.
No one in custody. CPD Area One detectives are investigating.

Man critically injured in Bronzeville shooting, police say
A man was critically injured in a shooting on the city's South Side, according to Chicago police.
The shooting happened on Wednesday around 11:03 p.m. in the 3500-block of Dearborn Street in Bronzeville.
A man, 39, was standing outside when he heard gunshots and suddenly felt pain.
The victim was shot in the abdomen and twice in the leg. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
There is no one in custody. CPD Area One detectives are investigating.

Woman injured in drive-by shooting in West Englewood, police say
A car passenger was shot during a South Side drive-by shooting, according to Chicago police.
The shooting happened around 9:42 p.m. on Wednesday in the 7100-block of Damen Avenue in West Englewood.
A woman, 20, was in a car when she was shot in the hip. She was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.
The victim said she the shooter was in a blue car.
There is no one in custody. CPD Area One detectives are investigating.

Teen found dead with gunshot wound to head on South Side, CPD says
A 15-year-old boy was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head Wednesday evening on the city's South Side.
Officers responded to a gunshot detection alert around 5:41 p.m. in the 7100 block of South King Drive in Greater Grand Crossing, Chicago police said.
The boy was found at the scene and was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A person of interest was taken into custody, police said. Detectives continue to investigate.
