CHICAGO (WLS) -- The city of Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, which impacts hundreds of people every year. As of July 7, 2024, there have been almost 1,200 total reported shootings in the city, according to the Chicago Police Department.

"We cannot take our eyes off the ball," Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said at a news conference following a violent July 4 holiday weekend. "We cannot stop thinking about the people who have been victimized by this crime."

While long holiday weekends often see a spike in gun violence, Chicago police and city officials are working to curb shootings and make the city safer.

Teen fatally shot while driving in Little Village, police say

A teenage boy died after being shot in the Little Village neighborhood on Monday, according to police.

The shooting happened around 5 p.m. as the 17-year-old was driving westbound on the 3800-block of 26th Street, police said.

Police said a truck approached the teen and someone started shooting in his direction.

The 17-year-old was shot in the left shoulder and was taken to the hospital where he later died.

No one is in custody.

Man shot to death in South Austin, Chicago police say

A man died after being shot on Monday night in South Austin, according to Chicago police.

The shooting happened around 10:23 p.m. in the 4800-block of W. West End Avenue.

Officers responded to a ShotSpotter call and found a 33-year-old man on the ground.

He had multiple gunshot wounds in the face and arms. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

No one is in custody.

Man killed in Englewood drive-by shooting: Chicago police

A man was killed in a drive-by shooting on the city's South Side on Monday night, Chicago police said.

Police said the shooting happened in the Englewood neighborhood's 600-block of West 69th Street at about 6:30 p.m.
