Chicago leaders celebrate successful DNC as dismantling begins
Chicago leaders celebrated a successful 2024 DNC Friday as the work of dismantling the security apparatus around the United Center and McCormick Place got underway.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- After four days of viral speeches, surprise guests, protests, street closures and security measures culminating in the nomination of Kamala Harris for president, the 2024 Democratic National Convention is over.

Chicago officials are celebrating a job well done. Thousands of protesters expressed their opinions peacefully and Chicago police made less than 100 arrests over four days.

Starting early Friday morning, the security barriers were being dismantled and streets were reopening. All areas around the United Center and McCormick Place will be open again by Monday, August 26.

Removal of United Center, McCormick Place security perimeter timeline

Crews began to dismantle the fences and barricades around the United Center and McCormick Place early Friday now that the Chicago Democratic National Convention has ended.

Full security perimeter reopening timeline:

McCormick Place: (all times subject to change)

Thursday, August 22

6 p.m. Perimeter take-down set to begin.

Friday, August 23

3 p.m. All major intersections cleared. I-55 off-ramp will be open.

Sunday, August 25

6 a.m. - Cermak from Michigan to Indiana will be clear.

8 a.m. - All area open and 75% of assets cleared off curbs.

Monday, August 26

6 a.m. - 100% of assets removed - area completely reopened.

Friday, August 23

1 a.m. - Takedown to begin (subject to change)

Saturday, August 24

Noon - Damen, Wood, and Adams open (if possible)

Most major intersections cleared for traffic.

Sunday, August 25

11:59 p.m. - All areas open & 75% of assets cleared off curbs

Monday, August 26

11:59 p.m. - All assets removed, reopen complete.

Protesters from around the US start arriving in Chicago ahead of DNC

Protesters from around the country are starting to arrive in Chicago on Saturday ahead of the Democratic National Convention.

An advocacy group for the homeless, known as the Poor People's Army, is marching from the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee to the DNC in Chicago to make their voices heard.

"We've been marching for 14 days to come to Chicago, because we feel like there's a moral responsibility," said organizer Cheri Honkala.

Thousands of journalists attend DNC Media Welcome Party at Navy Pier

The Media Welcome Party, put on by the Democratic National Convention Host Committee, welcomed 8,000 to 10,000 journalists for a Saturday night bash at Navy Pier.

It was history repeating itself, because it is the exact location where the Media Welcome Party was held during the DNC of 1996 here in Chicago.

Pritzker focuses on efforts to elect Harris, Walz at DNC luncheon: 'Are you ready for the fight?'

On the eve of the DNC, the who's who of the Democratic Party in Illinois gathered for a final luncheon near McCormick Place, focusing their efforts on launching Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to victory.

"I've got to ask you, are you ready for the fight? Are you ready for the fight?" said Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker. "So that in about 81 days, we'll all get to say the two words that we've been waiting 248 years to say in this country, 'Madame president!'"

1st protest to take place in Loop ahead of Democratic Convention

The first of two permitted demonstrations will happen on Sunday afternoon in the Loop.

The permitted protest will take demonstrators from Michigan to the Logan Statue by East 9th Street into Grant Park. The protest is called the March for Bodies Outside Unjust Laws.

The protest will begin near Michigan and Wacker and is set to begin at 5 p.m. on Monday.
