Man dies after jumping into city sanitary canal, police say

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A man died after jumping into the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal on the city's Southwest Side, police said.

Police say they saw the man and two others get out of a van they were following after the driver allegedly ran a red light. The van then stopped near 41st and Cicero and the man jumped into the canal.

Divers pulled him from the water and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The victim was identified as Dimitrius Baldwin, 25, of Dolton.

The two other people that were in the van are being questioned by police.
