CHICAGO (WLS) -- A northwest Indiana man is attempting a record-setting 120-mile swim across Lake Michigan and back.

Scott Weston Wolford, of Chesterton, took off Thursday morning from Chicago's Ohio Street Beach. The 51-year-old marathon swimmer said he expects the swim to St. Joseph, Mich., and back to Chicago to take him at least 70 hours.

The journey is roughly equivalent to swimming the English Channel six consecutive times.

In his first 6.5 hours, he had already made it almost 10 miles. You can track his progress online.

Wolford said he's doing it to raise money for The Nature Conservancy and awareness about environmental causes.
