Mother of Rosemoor man shot while paying bills speaks out against violence

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Demarco Kennedy, 32, was killed by a stray bullet while just sitting at the kitchen table of his family home.

It was something his mother, Katherine Kennedy Young, never expected to happen, but it was always in the back of her mind. She prayed that the violence in Chicago would never touch her family, but it did last Tuesday, in such a bizarre manner. Her son's death has now broken her heart.

"I am so mad, so angry, that someone killed my son," she said. "If I could have my son back in a heartbeat, I would give anything to get my son back. And I know that's not going to happen, but I am so mad, so angry and I just want people to stop, just stop the killing."

Kennedy was sitting at his kitchen table paying bills, when a bullet fired from a nearby Popeye's parking lot traveled between buildings and entered his window in the Rosemoor neighborhood killing the father of three and popular railroad employee.

"Just to go to his apartment and see the pool of blood of my son on the floor, unless you've been through losing a child, you don't know the effects, the magnitude," she said. "I just wanted to go and see if I could feel his spirit. I haven't been the same since."

Kathy Young had just moved from the neighborhood last year and had hoped her son would follow.

"My son left such a good legacy and he left such a good impression on everyone," she said. "I knew my son was loved, I knew he was a great man."

Now her middle child is gone and she's is left to wonder why.

She used to work for the Chicago Board of Elections. She just moved from the neighborhood last year, weary of the violence. She had hoped her son would follow, but he didn't.

Demarco's visitation is Friday. His wake and homegoing will be on Saturday.

No one was in custody as of Wednesday evening, police said.
