CHICAGO (WLS) -- Civilians are doing their part to "serve and protect" Chicago police with new bulletproof vests.

Some officers got a first look at their brand-new vests Monday afternoon.

The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation says many cops are using outdated vests. They're in the middle of a fundraising campaign to buy 8,000 replacements. They've almost reached their goal; they just passed the 7,000 mark.
